What is a gallery on a table?

A gallery is a raised rim or rail fitted to the perimeter of a table top. Its primary purpose was to keep small objects, porcelain, or writing equipment from sliding off. These borders take the form of pierced brass rails, carved wooden fretwork, or simple raised wooden ledges integrated directly into the timber top.

How were these tables used?

Victorian side tables served multiple domestic functions depending on their specific form and room placement. Writing tables accommodated correspondence, while lamp and occasional tables held lighting and decorative items in reception rooms. Washstands provided bedroom surfaces for jugs and basins, and butlers trays facilitated the serving of tea or refreshments across different areas of the house.

How do I identify a Victorian table?

Identification relies on observing specific timber choices, construction techniques, and stylistic markers characteristic of the nineteenth century. Common woods include solid mahogany, walnut, and pine, often worked with hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction. Stylistic cues such as Aesthetic Movement geometry, French revival curves, or turned barley twist legs help narrow down the decade of production.

Can I use a washstand as a side table?

Washstands adapt well to modern interiors as functional side tables or console surfaces in hallways and living spaces. Their original gallery backs provide a distinct decorative profile while offering practical containment for items placed on top. Their sturdy pine or hardwood construction makes them durable enough for daily use in contemporary rooms.
