How do I identify a Victorian ring?

Victorian rings often display heavier gold weights, sentimental motifs like serpents or padlocks, and rich coloured gemstones like rubies and garnets. The construction reflects the romantic and industrial aesthetics of the nineteenth century. Assay marks and Birmingham or Chester hallmarks frequently provide precise date letters when present inside the band. Hand-carved details and old mine cut diamonds further confirm the nineteenth-century origin.

What defines an Edwardian ring?

Edwardian rings are known for their light, airy aesthetic, frequently combining platinum and yellow gold to support delicate diamond clusters. The style leans towards garlands, lace-like filigree, and refined elegance. Originating in the reign of King Edward VII, these pieces favour white stones and pearls over the heavier coloured gems of the preceding Victorian era. Their construction utilises advanced platinum-working techniques for maximum strength with minimal visible metal.

Can I wear an antique ring daily?

Many antique rings are robust enough for everyday wear provided they receive proper care and regular inspections by a jeweller. Checking the security of the stone settings prevents accidental loss. Stones like opals and pearls require gentler treatment than diamonds or sapphires due to their lower hardness ratings. Removing rings during vigorous physical tasks preserves the antique gold bands and prongs.

What is an old cut diamond?

An old cut diamond refers to stones faceted by hand during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries before automated cutting machines existed. They possess distinct optical characteristics including smaller tables and deeper pavilions. These diamonds produce a characteristic chunky flash under low lighting rather than the brilliant modern sparkle. Collectors prize them for their unique individual character and historical authenticity.
