How do I care for cast iron outdoors?

Cast iron garden sets require periodic inspection for moisture and rust development, especially where paint finishes have thinned over time. Applying a protective wax or suitable outdoor coating helps preserve the metal through damp seasons.

What is an inglenook fire basket?

An inglenook fire basket is a substantial metal grate designed to hold solid fuel within large, deep Victorian fireplaces. These baskets usually sit alongside matching andirons and heavy fire tool suites.

Are garden sets weatherproof?

While cast iron is inherently heavy and weather resistant, prolonged exposure to moisture can cause surface oxidation and degradation. Storing furniture under cover during winter months prevents unnecessary weathering of the metal and any attached marble tops.

How can I date a cast iron set?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as Gothic Revival motifs, registration marks, and the specific foundry attribution stamped into the metal. Comparing structural bolt types and the crispness of the cast ornamentation also helps place pieces within the nineteenth century.
