How were bottle coasters used at the table?

Hosts used these stands to hold wine bottles and decanters while passing them around the dining table after the servants withdrew. The raised base kept condensation and drips away from the polished wood. Coasters were often pushed along the mahogany surface on small wheels or simply lifted from guest to guest to circulate the port or claret.

What materials are Victorian coasters made from?

The pieces utilise silver plate, Old Sheffield Plate, solid silver, rosewood and treen. Some variations incorporate Staffordshire china or papier-mâché. Bases are frequently lined with green or red baize to protect the dining table from friction and moisture marks.

How do I tell a single coaster from a pair?

Many examples survive as matched pairs or sets of three and four to accommodate multiple bottles of wine during a meal. Single pieces often turned up individually or served as central display stands. Matching dimensions, weight and decorative motifs confirm whether separate items originally belonged together as a set.

How do I care for antique silver-plated coasters?

Maintain the metal surfaces by dusting gently with a soft cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip thin plating. Keep the baize linings dry to prevent dampness from rotting the fabric. Store the pieces in stable humidity away from direct sunlight to preserve both the timber and the silver finish.
