How do I identify a Victorian library chair?

Victorian library chairs typically feature sturdy mahogany or walnut frames combined with deep leather upholstery and buttoning. They prioritise heavy construction and comfortable proportions suited for nineteenth-century studies. Look for turned wooden legs, brass castors, and generous armrests that indicate frequent use in period homes.

Are these chairs suitable for modern office desks?

Many nineteenth- and early twentieth-century examples, such as desk chairs and swivel forms, function well in contemporary workspaces. Their ergonomic buttoned backs provide robust lumbar support. Ensure the seat height matches your desk specifications before placing an antique chair into daily office use.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Maintain the leather by keeping the chair away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources that cause drying and cracking. Regular dusting prevents particle buildup in the tufted crevices. Apply appropriate leather balms sparingly to preserve the suppleness and deep colour of the hide over time.
