What is a bouillotte lamp?

A bouillotte lamp is a traditional French desk light featuring a central shaft arising from a saucer-shaped base. An adjustable shade slides up and down the central column to control the spread of illumination. Originally designed for card games, these lamps combine brass construction with painted toleware shades. They provide focused light suited for a desk or side table.

How do I date a brass desk lamp?

Dating a brass desk lamp involves examining the manufacturing techniques, wiring methods, and stylistic influences. Victorian and Edwardian pieces often display heavy cast components and classical architectural motifs. Later pieces from the 1920s introduce more utilitarian adjustable mechanisms and art deco styling. Comparing the form to documented period catalogues helps narrow down the decade of production.

Are these desk lamps safe to use?

Many antique desk lamps require rewiring to meet modern electrical safety standards before daily use. Listings often indicate whether a piece has been recently rewired by a professional. Buyers should consult a qualified electrician to inspect older metal fixtures and ensure the internal wiring is appropriate for current use. Preserving the exterior brass components does not interfere with updating the internal cables.

What is a students light?

A students light is an adjustable desk lamp designed to position the light source directly over reading material. These lamps typically feature articulated arms or swan neck designs that pivot easily. Originating in the nineteenth century, they were built for prolonged study and focused tasks. Their adjustable nature makes them practical for modern home offices.
