Are these lamps converted from old candlesticks?

Many examples began as traditional wax candleholders and received wiring at a later date to function as table lamps. Other pieces were manufactured directly as electric lamps while copying the exact proportions of antique sticks. This dual origin means buyers encounter both historical conversions and period-styled electric pieces within the same category.

How do I identify a Victorian brass lamp?

Victorian models frequently display substantial weight, cast components, and historical revival styles such as Gothic or ionic column forms. They rely on polished brass and turned metal rather than modern plated finishes. Examination of the base construction and metal thickness generally reveals the nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

What is a bouillotte lamp?

A bouillotte lamp is an adjustable desk or table light featuring a central cluster of candle-form stems beneath a characteristic toleware shade. The shade moves vertically on a central rod to direct the illumination. Originating in France, these pieces combine brass and painted metal for focused workspace lighting.

How should I clean a brass lamp?

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth to prevent grime accumulation on the metal and any paired fabric shades. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away the aged patina built up over decades. Gentle wiping preserves the historical character and subtle surface tones of the brass.
