What is a tall reading light?

A tall reading light is an elevated lamp designed to position illumination directly over a chair or desk. These pieces typically take the form of floor lamps, standard lamps, or tall table lamps. Most examples utilise adjustable stems or pivoting arms to direct the beam downward for tasks. They draw on nineteenth and early twentieth-century design periods including Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco.

How do I date a brass standard lamp?

Dating relies upon stylistic markers and manufacturing techniques visible in the base and column. Victorian and Edwardian examples frequently feature Corinthian column capitals or heavy cast brass bases. Later pieces from the 1920s and 1930s often incorporate modernist lines, simpler geometric forms, or alternative materials like onyx and marble. Makers' marks, where present on the metalwork, provide definitive chronological reference points.

Were these lamps originally electric?

Many nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century lamps began as oil lamps, gas fixtures, or candle standards before later conversion to electricity. Surviving student lamps and bouillotte designs often preserve their original mechanical configurations while accepting modern wiring. Listings frequently note rewiring to indicate that electrical cords and fittings have been updated for contemporary safety standards.
