Can the mirror be replaced?

Original mirror plates often display light foxing or spotting, which collectors view as an authentic sign of age. Replacing the glass is possible, but retaining the original bevelled plate preserves the historical integrity of the piece. If replacement becomes necessary, consult a specialist restorer to match the thickness and mounting method of the historic glass.

How do I care for the wood?

Maintain the timber surfaces by applying appropriate wax or polish sparingly to nourish the grain. Avoid placing the wardrobe in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the wood from splitting or warping. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth protects the polished finish and prevents dirt accumulation in carved or inlaid details.

Are keys usually included?

Many period wardrobes retain their original working locks and keys, though some rely on modern magnetic catches or replacement mechanisms. Enquire about the functional status of the lock if secure closure is a priority. A specialist locksmith can often supply a suitable replacement key if the historic mechanism remains intact.
