What are silver name card stands?

Silver name card stands are small decorative accessories used at formal dining tables to hold menu cards or guests' name markers. They combine practical utility with sculptural artistry, frequently taking the form of animals, birds, or figural subjects.

How were these stands used?

Hosts placed them at individual table settings or along the dining table so guests could easily identify their seats or inspect the scheduled courses. Larger dinner parties often utilised complete matched sets or thematic groupings to unify the table decoration.

How do I date an Edwardian stand?

Dating relies heavily upon official silver hallmarks stamped onto the metal, which indicate the assay office and the exact year of manufacture. Stylistic cues, such as the distinct aesthetic of Edwardian or Art Nouveau design, also help narrow the production era.

Are these pieces sold in boxes?

Certain sets survive inside their original fitted presentation boxes lined with velvet, silk, or leather. Original packaging protects the delicate silver stands and often indicates the luxury retailers who originally retailed them.
