Silver liquor tags are suspended around the neck of a decanter or bottle using an attached silver chain or a rigid metal collar. This allows the label to hang freely against the glass without obstructing the pour. Matching chains are often original to the piece, though replacements are common in older barware sets.

What spirits are named?

The titles stamped or pierced onto these tags typically include traditional fortified wines and spirits such as sherry, madeira, rum, gin, brandy, whisky, and champagne. Some examples feature unusual titles or initials for specific contents. Sets often group complementary table beverages together for formal dining use.

Dating silver liquor tags relies primarily on the style of the lettering, the decorative border, and the stamped hallmarks showing the assay office and date letter. Georgian and Regency pieces often feature bright-cut engraving, while Victorian examples lean towards heavier cast scrollwork. Changes in shape from simple crescents to elaborate vine leaves also help identify the period.

Are they sold in sets?

While many silver liquor tags survive as individual pieces, matching sets of three or more do appear. These sets allow hosts to label multiple decanters uniformly along a sideboard or dining table. Matched sets are particularly sought after by collectors of antique barware.
