What is a silver gilt pocket box?

A small container fashioned from silver and coated with gold on the interior or exterior. These pieces served practical daily functions for past generations. They were carried in pockets or reticules to store substances like snuff, or items such as visiting cards.

How were these boxes used?

Owners used them to dispense snuff, hold scented sponges for freshening the air, or protect delicate visiting cards. Their small scale made them ideal for personal portability during social engagements and travels.

How do I identify the period?

Makers' marks and date letters stamped into the silver provide the precise year and city of manufacture. Stylistic cues such as Georgian neoclassical lines or Victorian embossing also help date the piece. Examining the construction methods and hinges offers further clues to the era of origin.

How do I care for silver gilt?

Clean the surface gently with a soft microfibre cloth to remove dust without abrasive polishes. Avoid chemical dips that strip away the delicate gold layer. Store the box in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
