How do I date a silver corinthian lamp base?

Dating relies on hallmarks stamped into the metal, the style of the screw fittings, and the overall construction of the base. Victorian examples often show heavier cast components, while Edwardian pieces sometimes incorporate cut glass sections alongside the silver plate. Maker stamps and registration numbers also help pinpoint the exact decade of manufacture, moving from mid nineteenth century foundations into the twentieth century.

Were these originally made as electric lamps?

Most of these pieces started life as oil lamps before conversion to electricity during the twentieth century. The original burner mechanisms were removed and replaced with electrical lamp holders. Collectors look for professional conversions that preserve the original column structure without drilling destructive new holes through the main body.

How do I clean a silver plated lamp base?

Cleaning requires a soft microfibre cloth and a mild, non-abrasive silver polish formulated for plated items. Vigorous rubbing wears away the thin silver layer over time, particularly on high points like the acanthus leaves. Keep polish away from fabric cords and glass inserts to avoid staining or damage to adjacent materials.

What is the difference between silver plate and sterling silver?

Sterling silver contains a high purity standard of silver throughout the entire object and bears official assay office hallmarks. Silver plate consists of a base metal core covered by a thin outer coating of pure silver. While sterling pieces carry intrinsic precious metal weight, well-plated examples offer the same visual decorative impact at a different scale.
