What is a quartetto nest?

A quartetto nest consists of four tables that graduate in size to stack neatly beneath one another. They were designed for convenience in Edwardian drawing rooms. When needed, the tables separate to serve as individual occasional surfaces for tea or writing.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian pieces?

Victorian examples often feature darker mahogany and heavier proportions, reflecting mid to late nineteenth-century tastes. Edwardian pieces tend to employ brighter satinwood, lighter inlay, and more overt Sheraton revival styling. Examination of the secondary woods and construction methods helps confirm the exact period.

Were these originally coffee tables?

Most of these pieces started life as occasional tables, tray stands, or nests rather than low coffee tables. Later generations adapted them for modern seating heights and living arrangements. Their proportions make them well suited for use beside a sofa or chair.

How should I care for satinwood surfaces?

Satinwood requires gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth and protection from direct sunlight to preserve its golden tone. Avoid placing damp items directly on the polished timber. Occasional application of appropriate wax maintains the lustre of the finish.
