How do I clean a waxed pine dresser?

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a quality beeswax periodically to nourish the dry wood. Avoid using modern chemical sprays that can strip the historic wax finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the pine from warping or splitting over time.

What is the difference between a potboard and a base shelf?

A potboard consists of open wooden slats built near the floor between the legs of an eighteenth or nineteenth-century dresser base. This slatted design allowed damp pots to air dry after washing. Standard base shelves are usually solid boards enclosed by cupboards or sideboards, offering concealed storage rather than open utility.

How do I style shelves with antique plates?

Mix varying sizes of plates by placing larger platters at the back and smaller pieces toward the front in the display grooves. Leave enough space between items to let the timber background and construction details remain visible. Incorporate simple earthenware or ironstone to complement the honest character of the surrounding wood.
