How do I care for a plank top?

Maintain the timber by using dry cloths for dusting and avoiding excessive moisture on the unsealed grain. Periodic waxing protects the surface without altering the historical patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent the wood planks from splitting or bowing over time.

Were these tables used in kitchens?

Many examples originated in working farmhouses where they served multiple daily purposes, from food preparation to family dining. Their robust construction handled heavy domestic labour with ease. Over time, these utilitarian surfaces absorbed oils, spills, and wear, contributing to their distinct character.

How do I identify the timber?

Oak and chestnut display prominent growth rings and medullary rays, while elm exhibits a characteristic interlocking grain that resists splitting. Softer woods like pine and poplar present a lighter weight and smoother visual texture. Fruitwood varieties often show warm tones with subtle, tight grain patterns developed from orchard trees.

What is a refectory base?

A refectory base typically consists of four legs connected by a low horizontal stretcher running the length of the table. This architectural design prevents the long timbers from sagging under heavy loads. Such underframes provide ample legroom while maintaining rigid structural support for large plank surfaces.
