What is a girandole mirror?

A girandole mirror is a wall-mounted glass plate surrounded by an ornate frame that incorporates one or more candle arms. These fixtures were designed to capture and scatter light from candles across a room. They serve as both ornamental wall art and functional lighting. The surviving examples often display elaborate scrollwork typical of revival styles.

How do I hang a heavy candle mirror?

Hanging these pieces requires locating solid wall studs or using heavy-duty wall fixings rated for the combined weight of the wood, metal, and glass. Professional installation is often recommended due to the protruding candle arms and substantial frame weight. Ensuring secure attachment protects both the wall structure and the delicate gilding or cast metal branches from accidental impact.

Where should I place a mirrored wall sconce?

These pieces suit reception rooms, hallways, or dining spaces where reflected candlelight creates ambient illumination. Positioning them opposite windows or light sources maximises their decorative impact. Care should be taken to mount them at a height that prevents accidental contact with the projecting candle branches.

How do I clean a giltwood frame?

Giltwood frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to avoid damaging the delicate gold leaf layer. Moisture and chemical cleaners should be kept away from the gilded surface. Glass cleaner can be applied sparingly to the mirror plate using a cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep behind the frame edges.
