How do I clean an antique brass light?

Dust the metal gently with a soft dry cloth to prevent accumulation in the intricate scrollwork. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that can strip the historic patina or delicate gilding. Take extra care around crystal drops and porcelain flowers if the fixture includes them. Professional advice is recommended for deeper restoration work.

Are these lights suitable for modern electrical systems?

Many surviving fixtures have been adapted or rewired for contemporary electrical standards. Rewired examples often feature modern internal cabling while retaining their exterior antique components. Buyers should inspect the wiring status of individual pieces before installation. Consultation with a qualified electrician ensures safe integration into domestic circuits.

What is the difference between gilt bronze and brass?

Gilt bronze, or ormolu, involves an alloy of copper and tin coated with gold leaf or mercury gilt. This material typically permits sharper casting detail and a warmer finish than standard brass. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc used widely across both standard and high-end manufacturing. Both metals age distinctively over time, developing characteristic patinas.

How do I identify a Louis XV style fixture?

Look for pronounced asymmetry, C-scrolls, and naturalistic plant motifs such as acanthus leaves. These design elements reflect the eighteenth-century French aesthetic revived during later decades. Fixtures from these later revival periods maintain the energetic curves and elaborate ornamentation of the original movement. They frequently utilise heavy cast brass or bronze frames.
