What were repousse silver trinket boxes used for?

Victorian and Edwardian owners used these small containers to store precious personal items such as rings, pins, stamps, and small keepsakes on dressing tables. Snuff boxes and pill boxes were also carried in pockets or kept close at hand for daily use, combining practical storage with decorative display.

How can I date my silver trinket box?

British pieces typically feature hallmarks stamped into the metal, which include assay office symbols, maker's marks, and date letters that correspond to specific years. Comparing stylistic cues like Rococo revival scrolls or Edwardian floral motifs alongside these official stamps helps narrow down the period of manufacture.

What is the difference between solid silver and silver-gilt?

Solid silver means the entire object is constructed from silver alloy throughout its structure, maintaining the same metal composition from exterior to interior. Silver-gilt refers to solid silver that has had a layer of gold applied to its surface, which is commonly seen lining the inside of antique snuff and trinket boxes.

How do I care for antique repousse silver?

Clean the silver gently using a soft cloth to avoid flattening or wearing down the delicate raised details created by the repoussé hammer technique. Store the pieces away from damp environments and harsh chemical cleaners to preserve the natural patina and any internal gilt or velvet finishes.
