What is red lacquer gilt wood?

These pieces are furniture and decorative objects finished with red lacquer and gold leaf detailing. They include cabinets, wall mirrors, screens and sculptural figures. The materials combine wood bases with layered lacquer, gesso and carved giltwood. Many items originate from Chinese traditions or European Chinoiserie workshops.

How were these items used originally?

Cabinets and cupboards served for storage in domestic and temple interiors. Wall panels, screens and mirrors functioned as architectural decoration to divide spaces and catch the light. Figurative sculptures and Buddhist lions held religious or symbolic significance in temples and homes. Smaller items like fireplace bellows combined practical use with decorative Chinoiserie painting.

How do I clean lacquered furniture?

Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth to prevent scratching the lacquer and gold leaf. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads and excess moisture. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to protect the wood and lacquer finish. Professional conservation advice is recommended for damaged giltwood.

Are these pieces Chinese or European?

The selection includes both genuine Chinese antiquities and European interpretations of Asian design. Items range from nineteenth-century Chinese panels and figures to English and French Chinoiserie furniture. Italian cupboards and regional European pieces also appear alongside Asian imports. Each object reflects the cross-cultural exchange of decorative styles during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
