What periods do these pieces span?

The selection covers works from the nineteenth century and the Victorian era, moving through the Edwardian period and the interwar decades of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Mid-century examples from the 1950s and 1960s also feature prominently. This broad chronological range allows collectors to explore shifting artistic interpretations of floral subjects over more than a century.

What materials are used?

Artists employed oil paint on canvas, wood and metal, alongside watercolour and gouache on paper. Gold leaf and glass frequently contribute to the presentation of the framed works. These varied substrates support different artistic styles, from traditional Dutch golden age approaches to modernist French interpretations.

How should I hang these?

These pieces suit living spaces, studies and hallways where wall art can be viewed at eye level. Pairing watercolours or small oil paintings together creates a balanced arrangement on the wall. Consider the original frame when choosing a location, ensuring the room's lighting complements the pigments without causing glare on glass surfaces.

How do I identify a naive style?

Naive works exhibit a simplified perspective and unpretentious handling of form, often prioritising expressive colour and direct charm over strict academic realism. Flemish and French examples in this category showcase charmingly unpolished floral arrangements. Such pieces stand apart from formal Edwardian realism and British impressionist studies through their distinct lack of conventional proportion.
