Are these lamps safely wired for modern homes?

Many older pieces have undergone conversion from oil or candle to electricity at various points in their history. Buyers should inspect the internal wiring upon arrival to ensure it meets current safety standards. Rewiring is straightforward for a qualified electrician and preserves the antique brass structure while making the lamp suitable for daily use.

How do I date a brass column lamp?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as the severity of Neoclassical revival details, the presence of telescopic mechanisms, and base materials like marble or hardwood. Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature heavier castings and specific maker stamps. Comparing the column capitals and construction methods against documented period pieces helps narrow down the decade of production.

Can I find matching pairs in this selection?

The inventory frequently includes matched pairs of candlesticks and table lamps dating from the Georgian through to the Edwardian eras. These pairs share identical column heights, base weights, and casting patination. Matching standard lamps are scarcer due to their individual placement in period rooms, but paired table versions appear regularly.

How should I clean polished brass columns?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft cloth to prevent grime accumulation in the recessed flutes of the column. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip away historical patination and soften the sharp edges of the cast details. Preserving the surface allows the natural ageing process to continue enhancing the depth of the metal.
