What is a pocket sovereign case?

A pocket sovereign case is a small metal container engineered to carry gold sovereign coins securely in a waistcoat or jacket pocket. These accessories protected valuable currency from loss and damage during daily circulation in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

How were combination cases used?

Combination cases performed multiple duties by housing gold coins alongside matches in an integrated vesta compartment or holding banknotes. This design reduced the number of small items a gentleman needed to carry in his pockets throughout the day.

How do I date a silver case?

Dating relies upon the stamped hallmarks, which include specific letters representing the year of assay and town symbols such as the Birmingham anchor. Maker marks and stylistic conventions from the Victorian, Edwardian, or George V periods provide further chronological context.

Can modern coins fit inside?

Historic cases were tailored precisely to historical gold sovereign dimensions using internal spring clips to hold the coin in place. While modern bullion sovereigns share similar diameters, variations in thickness can affect how securely a historic clip grips the coin.
