What is a parquetry bedside cupboard used for?

These cabinets serve as small bedside storage units holding nighttime essentials within an enclosed cupboard or drawer. The upper surface traditionally accommodates a lamp or drinking glass protected by a fitted marble slab. Their compact proportions allow them to fit beside lower nineteenth-century beds as well as modern bedroom layouts. The enclosed lower section conceals personal items while maintaining a decorative presence in the room.

How do I identify Louis XV style pieces?

Louis XV style pieces display characteristic cabriole legs curving outward and sweeping lines across the apron and frame. Ormolu mounts often trace the shoulder of the leg and accent the corners. Surface decoration frequently employs asymmetrical floral marquetry or elaborate parquetry veneer patterns. The overall silhouette remains graceful and undulating rather than strictly rectilinear.

How do I care for antique veneer?

Antique veneer requires protection from direct sunlight and rapid humidity changes to prevent lifting or splitting. Wax polishing maintains the lustre of the wood without sealing the surface permanently. Moisture should be kept away from wooden joints and unsealed edges. Using coasters on the marble top safeguards the surrounding wooden mouldings from accidental spills.
