Where should I hang pair carved mirror sconces?

These pieces look particularly striking when placed above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or flanking a doorway. Their reflective surfaces naturally bounce light around smaller or darker reception rooms. Ensure they are securely anchored to the wall using appropriate fixings given the weight of the carved wood and glass components.

How do I identify an 18th-century piece?

Eighteenth-century examples often exhibit deeper hand carving in the wood and specific regional characteristics associated with Venetian or Georgian workshops. The glass plates may show subtle signs of age and oxidation. Examining the construction methods on the reverse side also helps determine the historical period of manufacture.

Can I burn real candles in the sconces?

Many girandoles feature original or period-compatible candle arms designed to hold wax tapers. Care must be taken to protect the surrounding giltwood and wall from dripping wax. Modern LED alternatives are sometimes used by collectors to preserve fragile historic finishes from heat and smoke damage.

What is the difference between a mirror and a girandole?

A standard wall mirror serves primarily for reflection and decoration without integral candle holders. A girandole specifically incorporates attached arms designed to hold candles directly in front of the glass. Both forms are represented across the Victorian, Regency, and earlier historical periods available here.
