How do I identify a Victorian armchair?

Victorian armchairs are identified by characteristic revival styles, exposed timber frames of walnut or mahogany, and deep upholstery techniques. Look at the legs, carving motifs, and frame construction to place the piece within the nineteenth century. Many examples feature button-backed padding or serpentine fronts. Comparing the specific joinery and wood finish helps differentiate mid-nineteenth-century work from later Edwardian reproductions.

Were these chairs used for dining?

Dining chairs from this era typically had smaller padded seats and upright backs designed to fit around a dining table. Larger armchairs and library chairs were intended for studies, drawing rooms and sitting spaces. Sets of dining chairs often came in groups of four or six with matching mahogany or walnut frames. Single armchairs served specific relaxation purposes in bedrooms or parlours rather than dining.

What is a gentleman's chair?

A gentleman's chair is a spacious nineteenth-century armchair with a padded back and open arms built for a male occupant. They were companion pieces to smaller, lower ladies' chairs designed to accommodate bulky Victorian dresses. These chairs prioritised comfort with sprung seats and robust walnut or mahogany frames. They frequently stood in libraries, smoking rooms or formal reception spaces.

How should I care for leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery on antique chairs requires gentle cleaning and occasional conditioning to prevent the hide from drying out. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and keep the leather away from direct heat sources. Maintaining the natural moisture of nineteenth-century leather preserves its finish and flexibility. Regular dusting with a soft cloth protects the surface from abrasive particles.
