How do I wire an antique giltwood lamp?

Most older lamp bases and converted candlesticks require modern rewiring to meet safety standards. A qualified electrician can thread modern cord through the existing central channel without damaging the antique wood structure. Keep the original lampholders if they retain character, but ensure internal components are safe for contemporary use.

Where should I place a standard lamp?

Floor lamps suit corners of reception rooms or beside reading chairs where height adds vertical balance. Ensure the heavy carved base rests on a stable surface away from heavy foot traffic. Pair them with restrained fabric shades so the ornate giltwood stem remains the visual focus.

How do I tell Italian from French pieces?

Italian pieces often display the bold, dramatic carving associated with Florentine Baroque and deep acanthus leaf motifs. French designs tend toward the lighter, curved asymmetry of Rococo and Louis XV styles. Examine the weight of the wood and the rhythm of the scrollwork to distinguish between the two regional workshops.
