What periods do these pieces come from?

The selection spans from the seventeenth century through the Georgian and Victorian eras up to the mid-twentieth century. Nineteenth-century works form a significant portion of the available items. Alongside these older pieces, collectors will find items dating from the nineteen-twenties, thirties, and sixties reflecting various historical revivals.

How should I hang an ornate gilt framed artwork?

These heavier pieces require secure fixings into wall studs or appropriate masonry anchors to support the weight of the wood and gesso frames. Ensure the hanging wire or brackets match the substantial build of the frame. Position the artwork away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature changes to protect both the oil paint and the gilded surface.

Are the frames original to the paintings?

Many pieces retain their period frames, which were often chosen or made specifically to complement the style of the artwork. Gilt gesso frames frequently match the era of the canvas they enclose. Some works may be paired with sympathetic frames from a similar period rather than the exact original housing, reflecting centuries of mounting and framing choices.

What subjects are most common?

Landscapes, seascapes, and portraiture dominate the subjects, often reflecting British, Scottish, and continental European scenes. Floral still-lifes and genre scenes depicting daily life also appear frequently. Artists drew inspiration from Dutch Golden Age styles, impressionism, and traditional portrait painting traditions.
