What is an ormolu mounted chevet?

An ormolu mounted chevet is a small French bedside cabinet decorated with gilt bronze mounts. These tables provide bedside storage while displaying decorative wood veneers. They emerged from traditional French cabinet-making styles, incorporating marble tops and intricate marquetry in various nineteenth and early twentieth-century designs.

How were these bedside cabinets used?

These tables served primarily beside beds to hold lighting, reading materials and personal items. Their enclosed cupboards and drawers kept nighttime necessities out of sight. Today they function flexibly as bedside companions, small lamp tables or decorative accent pieces in living spaces.

How do I identify Louis XV style?

Louis XV style pieces typically feature curved lines, cabriole legs and asymmetrical floral marquetry. The overall aesthetic is fluid and organic rather than rigid. Ormolu mounts on these pieces often trace the scrolling contours of the wood frame and accent the corners.

Are marble tops original to these tables?

Marble tops are a standard and practical feature found on many French bedside cabinets of this era. They provide a hardwearing, smooth surface that resists staining from water and cosmetics. Various colours of marble appear across the pieces, complementing the underlying kingwood, walnut or mahogany veneers.

How do I care for kingwood veneer?

Kingwood veneer requires gentle cleaning with a dry or barely damp cloth to protect the polished surface. Avoid harsh chemicals and keep the timber away from direct heat sources. Periodic application of appropriate furniture wax helps maintain the lustre of the wood grain and protects the finish.
