How do I know if an artwork is genuinely original?

Original works display genuine brushstrokes, plate marks, texture in the pigment, and paper grain that print reproductions lack under magnification. Signatures are typically written directly onto the surface in wet medium or pencil rather than printed as dots. Examining the reverse often reveals artist studio stamps, framer labels, or handwritten titles that confirm the unique physical nature of the piece.

What is the best way to frame and hang antique works on paper?

Watercolours and drawings require mounting with acid-free museum boards to prevent yellowing and degradation over time. Glazing with UV-filtering glass protects fugitive pigments from fading under indoor light. Keep framed works away from direct sunlight and damp exterior walls to preserve both the paper support and the original frame.

How should I care for an antique oil painting?

Oil paintings on canvas or wood panel need stable indoor humidity and temperatures to prevent paint cracking or wood warping. Dust surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush without applying moisture or household cleaners. Avoid touching the paint layer directly, as natural oils from skin can damage fragile nineteenth-century varnishes.

What is the difference between a watercolour and a gouache painting?

Watercolour relies on transparent washes where the white of the paper shines through to create luminosity and light. Gouache incorporates chalk or white pigment, making the paint opaque and solid. Many artists combined both mediums within a single sheet, using gouache to highlight water sparkle or clouds.
