How do I hang a heavy oil painting?

Heavy oil paintings on canvas require secure wall fixings directly into wall studs or suitable masonry plugs rather than standard picture hooks. Utilising two fixing points distributes the weight evenly and keeps the antique frame level. Ensure the hanging wire or cord attached to the wooden stretcher frame is robust and suitable for the age of the piece. Professional framing hooks provide additional security for larger Victorian and Edwardian canvases.

Should watercolours be kept out of sunlight?

Watercolours on paper are sensitive to direct ultraviolet light, which can fade pigments over extended periods. Hanging them away from direct sunlight preserves the original tones of the sea and sky. Using conservation-grade glass with UV-filtering properties during framing further protects vulnerable paper works from environmental degradation.

What is the difference between an oil painting and a watercolour?

Oil paintings utilise pigment suspended in drying oils applied to canvas or wooden board, creating rich textures and deep colour saturation. Watercolours involve water-soluble pigments applied in translucent washes onto paper. Oils generally tolerate environmental humidity better than works on paper, which require protective glass glazing and secure backing boards.

How can I tell the period of a maritime painting?

The clothing of figures, the type of vessels depicted, and the framing style offer strong clues to the date of execution. Steamships indicate a late nineteenth or twentieth-century date, whereas traditional sailing luggers and clippers often point towards earlier Victorian periods. Signatures, exhibition labels on the reverse, and the construction of the wooden stretcher frame also help narrow down the decade.
