How do I date an old portrait?

Dating relies on the sitter's costume, hairstyle, and the construction methods of the canvas and stretcher frame. Clues hidden in the brush technique also point toward specific artistic periods. Comparative analysis with known dated works by similar regional schools helps narrow the decade of creation.

What is an unlined canvas?

An unlined canvas is the original fabric support retained without a secondary canvas backing attached to it. This preservation state is valued by collectors seeking maximum originality. Such canvases often show historical ageing on the reverse side that corresponds to their recorded age.

Why are some portraits unsigned?

Many historical portraits were produced by regional schools or working artists who did not sign commissioned likenesses. Attribution then depends on stylistic markers and historical records. Unsigned works frequently represent accomplished output from lesser-documented hands of their era.

How do I care for canvas paintings?

Paintings on canvas require stable indoor humidity and temperature to prevent the fabric and wooden stretcher from warping. Direct sunlight should be avoided to protect oil pigments from fading. Dusting should be done gently with a soft, dry implement without applying pressure to the painted surface.
