How should I frame an antique sketch?

Works on paper require professional framing with acid-free mounting boards and UV-filtering glazing to protect fragile pigments and paper supports from environmental damage over time. Keep the framed drawing away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to preserve the integrity of the original ink, pencil or watercolour materials.

What is the difference between a sketch and a painting?

A sketch prioritises rapid observation, raw mark-making and experimental composition, often executed quickly on location or inside a working sketchbook. A painting typically represents a more resolved, finished studio piece involving layered mediums and greater preparation. Many listings on this page blur this distinction by offering finished watercolour studies alongside quick graphite outlines.

Can I identify where a sketch was made?

Many historical drawings feature contemporary ink inscriptions, artist notes or topographical titles written directly in the margins or on the reverse of the sheet. These annotations often record specific towns, architectural landmarks or dates. Researching the artist's recorded travels or associated sketching clubs frequently reveals the exact geographical context of the scene.

Why do some sketches feature studio stamps?

Estate stamps or studio collection marks were frequently applied by executors after an artist's death to authenticate remaining contents of their studio workspace. These dry stamps or ink markings confirm provenance directly from the maker's collection. Collectors prize stamped sheets because they provide a reliable paper trail back to the primary source.
