What periods do these pieces date from?

The selection includes pieces from the 19th century, Victorian period, Edwardian era, and the 1920s and 1930s. Each era brings distinct decorative interpretations to the lacquer and painted finishes. Earlier items often show Victorian or 19th-century cabinet-making techniques, whilst the later pieces from the 1920s and 1930s lean into brighter Chinoiserie and Kashmiri lighting and small storage forms.

How do I identify Kashmiri items?

Kashmiri pieces are typically characterised by dense hand-painted patterns on wood or papier-mache. They often utilise vibrant green backgrounds combined with gilt and gold leaf. These items frequently appear as table lamps rather than large cabinets, showing distinct regional floral and pictorial motifs.

What materials are used in the construction?

The primary materials are wood and lacquered wood, supplemented by papier-mache in specific lighting pieces. Brass is commonly utilised for hardware and decorative accents. Surfaces are finished with lacquer, paint, and frequently gilt or gold leaf to create the distinctive aesthetic.

Are these pieces purely decorative?

Whilst they offer strong visual impact through hand-painted Chinoiserie and oriental styling, they serve functional roles. Side cabinets, commodes, and apothecary chests provide practical bedside storage. Table lamps combine painted decoration with functional lighting to sit alongside a bed.
