What is a bumper automatic movement?

A bumper automatic utilises an internal oscillating weight that does not rotate in a full circle. Instead, it swings through an arc and hits buffer springs. This early self-winding system gives the wearer a distinct physical tap on the wrist as the watch operates.

How do I identify the production year?

Production years are typically estimated using movement serial numbers or specific case references recorded during manufacture. Mid-century examples on this page primarily date from the 1940s through the 1960s. Archival records and movement calibres provide the most reliable dating evidence.

What distinguishes a Constellation from a Seamaster?

The Constellation line generally represents the higher-grade chronometer tier, often featuring observatory medallions on the case back and elevated dial finishing. Seamaster models focus more on water resistance and robust everyday wear. Both families share various automatic calibres from the same production eras.

Are these watches suitable for daily wear?

These vintage mechanical wristwatches function well for regular wear provided they receive proper care and routine servicing. Leather straps and acrylic crystals require standard maintenance. Avoiding excessive moisture protects older water-resistant seals on Seamaster and Geneve models.
