How were oak wood panels used originally?

These panels functioned primarily as wall linings, structural elements within church altarpieces, or decorative components built into large storage coffers and cupboards. They provided insulation and visual dignity to stone and timber rooms. Over subsequent centuries, many panels were salvaged from demolished buildings or dismantled furniture to be mounted purely as decorative wall art.

How do I distinguish sixteenth-century linenfold from later revivals?

Early sixteenth-century linenfold panels display irregular hand-tooled tool marks, subtle asymmetries, and dense, heavy timber grain developed over centuries. The folds appear crisp yet integrated into the board construction. Revival pieces from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries often exhibit uniform machine planing, perfectly symmetrical folds, and lighter secondary woods on the reverse.

How should I mount a heavy carved panel on a wall?

Due to the substantial weight of dense oak timber, panels require professional wall fixings anchored directly into structural studs or masonry. Metal brackets or custom concealed battens distribute the load safely. Allowing slight clearance behind the timber prevents moisture accumulation against the wall surface, protecting the historic wood from warping.

What periods are represented in oak wood panels?

The inventory spans from the sixteenth century through the seventeenth-century Jacobean era and Georgian period, up to Victorian and Edwardian revivals. Each era brought distinct carving depths and stylistic motifs. Renaissance and Gothic Revival influences frequently reappear across these timelines, reflecting successive generations of cabinetmakers copying earlier aesthetics.
