What were mother of pearl card cases used for?

Victorians used these slim containers to carry engraved visiting cards when making social calls or leaving cards at acquaintances' homes. The rigid shell protected the paper cards from bending inside pockets or reticules. Leaving a card signalled that a polite visit had been paid, making these decorative holders essential accessories for nineteenth-century etiquette.

How do I clean mother of pearl?

Clean the surface gently using a soft, damp cloth without harsh chemical detergents or abrasive cleaners that can dull the natural iridescence. Dry the piece immediately with a lint-free cloth to protect any metal mounts or velvet linings. Avoid soaking these items in water, as moisture can loosen the adhesive holding the delicate shell plates to the wooden or brass carcase.

Are these items made of real shell?

Yes, genuine examples utilise natural nacre harvested from the inner layer of pearl oysters and marine molluscs. Under close inspection, natural growth lines and shifting iridescent colours reveal their organic origin. Imitation plastics appeared later, but antique pieces from the Victorian and Georgian eras feature authentic shell panels secured over rigid foundations.

Why do some cases include silver cutlery?

Many Victorian dining sets paired silver-bladed fruit knives with pearl handles because fruit acids tarnished standard steel cutlery. The inert nature of nacre prevented any unpleasant metallic taste when eating delicate foods. These cased dessert services were presented as wedding gifts or high-status dining accessories, complete with fitted velvet interiors.
