How do I use an escritoire?

Lower the hinged fall-front panel to reveal the internal writing surface, small drawers, and pigeonholes intended for correspondence. The drop-front locks shut with a key to keep papers secure when not in use. Many examples include fitted leather or velvet writing inserts on the interior flap. Close the panel after writing to conceal the desk contents and display the exterior marquetry pattern.

What is a bonheur du jour?

A bonheur du jour is a compact lady's writing desk featuring an upper tier of shelves and small drawers mounted above the table surface. These desks were designed for casual correspondence in a private boudoir or parlour. They appear frequently in nineteenth-century walnut and satinwood. The petite scale makes them adaptable for placement in modern residential settings.

Where should I place an escritoire?

Position the cabinet against a stable interior wall away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect delicate veneers and wood movement. Ensure adequate floor space in front of the piece for the drop-front flap to open fully. Because the decorated fall-front remains a primary focal point, placement in a study, drawing room, or hallway allows the marquetry work to be seen.
