An encrier is simply the French term for an inkstand or inkwell designed to hold writing materials on a desk. These pieces typically combine a heavy stone or marble base with one or more ink pots and a channel for laying pens.

How do I clean a marble inkstand?

Marble requires gentle maintenance using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust without scratching the polished surface. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or excess water, particularly around gilt bronze mounts and exposed stone edges.

Are the inkwells functional?

Most antique inkstands retain their original glass or ceramic liners inside the metal collars, making them physically capable of holding ink. Modern writers often use them for display or dry storage rather than daily fountain pen filling due to age and potential wear.

What is Ashford marble?

Ashford marble is not true marble but a fine-grained black limestone quarried in Derbyshire, England, used for ornamental stonework. It is frequently associated with inlaid mosaic designs featuring floral or geometric patterns in coloured stones.
