How do I date a mahogany tabletop vanity mirror?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber choices, and hardware styles. Earlier 18th-century pieces often feature delicate hand-cut dovetails and ogival base brackets, while Victorian examples tend to be heavier with bolder mouldings. Secondary woods inside the drawers also provide clues, as does the thickness and bevelling of the mirror glass itself.

Were these mirrors always used on dressing tables?

They were designed primarily for placement on chests of drawers, side tables, or dedicated dressing desks in bedrooms and dressing rooms. Their portability allowed them to be moved to wherever natural light was best. Some specialised variants were also made for travel use as campaign items.

Why do some mirrors have drawers in the base?

The small box plinth beneath the glass served a dual purpose as a sturdy weighted base and a storage compartment for jewellery, cosmetics, or shaving accessories. Configurations range from a single long drawer to serpentine banks of three small drawers.

Is the mirror glass usually original?

Original mirror glass often exhibits light foxing, minor speckling, or slight distortion due to the age of the silvering process. Many pieces have had their fragile glass plates replaced over the centuries for clearer reflections. Checking the backing boards and silvering helps determine if the glass dates to the period of the frame.

How should I care for an antique mahogany mirror?

Keep the wood conditioned using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone sprays, applying it sparingly and buffing gently. Avoid placing the mirror in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer lifting. Clean the glass with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly.
