What is a pier table?

A pier table is a console designed to occupy the wall space, known as the pier, situated between two architectural windows in a formal room. These tables frequently incorporate matching mirror plates mounted directly to the wall or integrated into the console structure above.

How were these tables used?

Homeowners positioned these tables in reception rooms and hallways to reflect natural light from windows and display decorative ornaments upon the stone surface. The combination of a marble top and a tall mirror created an illusion of greater spatial depth within nineteenth-century interiors.

How do I identify French Empire style?

French Empire pieces rely on classical architectural proportions, dark mahogany surfaces, and restrained cast brass or gilt mounts. These designs often feature bold structural columns and geometric symmetry drawn from classical antiquity.

What is flame mahogany?

Flame mahogany is a decorative veneer harvested from the junction where branches meet the main trunk of the tree. Cabinet makers arranged these swirling grain patterns symmetrically to create dramatic visual movement across table aprons and drawer fronts.
