What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is a large double-sided writing table built with drawers and cupboards on both faces. This configuration allowed two people to sit opposite each other and work in a shared study or library. These pieces typically feature generous proportions and freestanding designs so they can sit in the middle of a room rather than against a wall.

How do I care for leather desk tops?

Leather writing surfaces require gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth followed by a neutral leather cream to prevent drying and cracking. Avoid using harsh chemical solvents or placing hot cups directly on the hide. Maintaining the leather preserves the gold tooling and keeps the writing surface supple through daily use.

How do I tell Georgian from Victorian desks?

Georgian desks generally exhibit cleaner architectural lines, finer drawer dovetails, and simpler bracket feet or plinths. They date from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and often use solid mahogany without heavy machine-cut veneers. Victorian examples tend to be heavier, sometimes incorporating elaborate carved mouldings, larger proportions, and richer flame mahogany veneers or applied brass galleries.

Are these desks suitable for modern offices?

These desks provide ample surface area and deep drawer storage that easily accommodate modern paperwork and desktop accessories. Their freestanding nature allows them to act as striking focal points in contemporary home studies. Buyers should measure kneehole clearances carefully to ensure comfortable seating height with modern office chairs.
