What is a mahogany chest wardrobe used for today?

These pieces provide substantial storage capacity for modern bedrooms, offering deep drawers for folded clothing and upper compartments for hanging garments or linens. Their robust internal configuration makes them practical alternatives to modern wardrobes while introducing historical character to a room.

How do I tell a Georgian piece from an Edwardian one?

Georgian examples usually display heavier architectural cornices, hand-cut dovetails, and simpler or more restrained classical veneers. They often date from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries. Edwardian pieces, appearing around nineteen hundred, frequently exhibit lighter proportions, delicate boxwood stringing, and sometimes form part of larger matching bedroom suites.

What is inside the upper doors of these pieces?

The upper section most commonly houses original sliding wooden trays, which were designed to hold folded linens and garments. Some pieces have been converted internally to incorporate modern hanging rails. Checking the interior reveals whether the original configuration of shelves or pull-out trays remains intact.

Where were these wardrobes placed in historic homes?

They stood primarily in principal bedrooms, dressing rooms, or upstairs galleries where household linens and gentlemen's attire were kept. Their imposing presence suited large rooms with high ceilings. Housekeepers also utilised them in linen rooms to store household textiles securely away from dust and light.
