Where were these chairs used?

They typically furnished nineteenth-century libraries, sitting rooms, and bedrooms across English country houses. Their low profiles made them ideal for sitting close to fireplaces and reading for extended periods.

How do I identify the period?

Period identification relies on frame timbers like walnut and mahogany combined with stylistic cues such as aesthetic movement legs. Victorian and Edwardian examples often display specific upholstery methods and maker stamps.

What fabrics cover these chairs?

Original and restored examples utilise velvet, calico, ticking, and various traditional upholstery fabrics. Some pieces retain plain calico linings while others feature luxurious velvet or patterned ticking.
