How do I mount these wall lights securely?

These fixtures require professional installation to ensure the weight of the metal and crystal is supported properly by the wall structure. Electric wiring must be checked and adapted to meet current domestic standards before operation. Matching the fixing screws to the specific wall type prevents movement when arms are adjusted or bulbs are replaced.

Are these fixtures wired for modern electricity?

Most antique wall lights arrive with historical wiring or require rewiring to comply with modern safety codes. A qualified electrician can easily adapt the internal channels for contemporary bulb fittings. Retaining the original sockets is sometimes possible, but modern internal components ensure safe daily use in a home.

How do I clean gilt bronze and ormolu safely?

Dusting with a soft, dry brush removes surface particles without disturbing the delicate metallic finish. Water and chemical polishes should be avoided to prevent stripping the historical gilding. Gentle maintenance preserves the aged patina that develops across centuries of exposure to domestic environments.

How do I identify the period of a sconce?

Dating relies upon examining the casting methods, screw types, and mounting plates visible on the reverse of the fixture. Heavier bronze castings and hand-chased details typically point to nineteenth-century production, while lighter brass forms often align with early twentieth-century manufacturing. Comparing the stylistic motifs against documented French design revivals helps narrow down the decade of creation.
