What is a louis xv revival chair?

A louis xv revival chair is a nineteenth-century seating piece modelled on eighteenth-century French designs. These chairs feature characteristic curved woodwork and plush upholstery. Craftsmen produced them in walnut, mahogany, beech, and giltwood for Victorian and French revival interiors.

How do I use them at home?

These armchairs fit naturally into living rooms, parlours, and bedrooms as occasional seating. Their generous proportions provide comfortable support for reading or relaxing. Pair them with complementary side tables or sofas to create balanced conversational groupings.

How do I identify the wood?

Examine the exposed frame around the arms and back to determine the material. Walnut and mahogany display natural grain patterns, while giltwood reveals a gold surface. Beech appears on painted or polished frames, offering a sturdy base for carving.

Are they found in pairs?

Many examples survive as matched pairs of armchairs or salon seats. This reflects their original manufacture for formal reception rooms. Singular pieces also appear frequently among surviving nineteenth-century inventory.
