What is a louis xv bronze mount?

It is a decorative metal fitting cast in bronze and finished with gilt, applied to nineteenth-century revival furniture. These mounts echo the asymmetrical scrolling forms of the French rococo period. The term also covers the entire category of furniture, such as commodes and desks, decorated with this distinctive hardware. Workshops produced these items to satisfy Victorian and Edwardian demand for opulent French interior styles.

How do I identify a bureau plat?

A bureau plat is a freestanding writing desk featuring a wide, flat top often lined with leather. It typically stands on four cabriole legs decorated with gilt bronze sabots and mounts. Unlike traditional secretary desks, a bureau plat does not have a fold-down front or upper shelving. It was designed to sit in the centre of a room rather than against a wall.

Where were these pieces made?

The majority of these pieces originated in Paris workshops during the nineteenth century. Master cabinet makers reproduced and reinterpreted eighteenth-century French designs for international clientele. Some examples bear retailer marks from London firms who imported the finished furniture or assembled components locally. Parisian ateliers remained the primary source for the highest quality ormolu mounts and marquetry.

How do I care for ormolu mounts?

Maintain gilt bronze mounts by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid commercial metal polishes, which can strip the thin layer of gold leaf from the underlying bronze. Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to protect both the metal gilding and the underlying wood veneer. Professional conservation ensures the finish remains stable over time.
