What is a library book caddy stand?

A library book caddy stand is a piece of furniture designed to hold and organise books in a study, library, or drawing room. The selection includes revolving bookcases and book troughs. These pieces allow a reader to keep several volumes accessible from an armchair or desk without taking up excessive floor space.

How do revolving bookcases work?

Revolving bookcases sit upon a concealed internal pivot and base mechanism that allows the entire wooden carcase to spin smoothly. This enables access to books stored on all four sides from a single stationary position. Metal and brass components within the base support the weight of the volumes while reducing friction during rotation.

Which woods were used for these stands?

Cabinet makers utilised timbers such as mahogany and oak as the primary materials for these book stands. Walnut also appears among the listings. Finer examples incorporate satinwood inlay to provide decorative contrast against the darker body timber.

How do I date a library stand?

Dating relies upon observing the timber, style characteristics, and construction methods. Pieces from the Victorian period tend to use heavy mahogany, while Edwardian examples often feature lighter proportions and satinwood inlay. Later variations from the nineteen-thirties adopt simpler circular oak forms without revival ornamentation.
