What is a tub armchair?

A tub armchair is a seat featuring a rounded, enclosed backrest that flows seamlessly into low arms. The resulting circular profile resembles the shape of a wooden tub. This design provides enclosed support around the sitter, making it a popular choice for studies, libraries, and office desks where prolonged sitting occurs.

How do I date a leather armchair?

Dating relies on observing the timber species, construction methods, and hardware style. Earlier nineteenth-century examples often utilise solid mahogany or oak with hand-hammered brass tacks and heavy turnings. Later pieces from the art deco and twentieth-century periods introduce different wood veneers, simpler framing, and alternative stitching techniques. Examining the underneath structure and castors also helps confirm the period.

Where should I place a tub chair?

These chairs function well as desk companions, reading seats in a library, or occasional seating in a living room. Their compact curved footprint allows them to fit neatly into corners or pull up to writing tables without dominating a space. Because many vintage and antique versions include swivel bases or castors, they adapt easily to active workspaces.

How do I care for antique leather?

Antique leather requires gentle cleaning and regular conditioning to prevent the hide from drying and cracking. Keeping the material away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight preserves the natural oils in the skin. Applying a suitable leather balm maintains the supple texture and protects the historic surface patination built up over generations.
