What is a partners desk?

A partners desk is a large, double-sided piece of furniture built with drawers and cupboards on both the front and the back. This configuration allowed two individuals, such as business partners or solicitors, to sit and work opposite each other at the same desk. These desks typically feature generous dimensions and were made using dense timbers like mahogany and oak to withstand heavy daily use in offices and libraries.

How do I care for a leather desk top?

The leather inset on a period desk requires gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth followed by a suitable leather wax or conditioner to prevent drying and cracking. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and excessive moisture, which can damage both the leather and the surrounding wood. Keeping the surface protected from direct sunlight preserves the colour and the gold tooling often applied around the edges of the hide.

Can these desks fit in a modern home office?

These large tables require substantial floor space and adequate clearance around all sides, particularly partners desks that are meant to be viewed and accessed from every angle. Measuring the room carefully ensures the piece does not overwhelm the available space. Their classic forms pair well with both traditional and contemporary interiors, serving as a striking focal point in a home study or boardroom.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Georgian desks?

Georgian desks, dating from the 18th century, often display restrained classical proportions, restrained mahogany veneers, and cabinetmaking focused on clean architectural lines. Victorian examples tend to be heavier, sometimes incorporating elaborate carving, richer flame mahogany veneers, and deeper plinth bases. Looking at the secondary timbers inside the drawers and the style of the brass hardware helps confirm the manufacturing period of the piece.
